Klingons, Klingons, Leeloo!

I have neglected my blog for a bit, and I apologize!!! Since the new year started, I've been busy with custom work.

More Klingon gear, more Leeloo (the bandage costume is incredibly popular, let me tell you...) and other things in the work.

I keep saying I am going to build up my stock so I have more to post on my website, and that will happen, just slower than I anticipated.

However, with that in mind: I have a shoot coming up soon. I need to get my behind in gear to make a few new things for it though! I always work that way with shoots, so I must like the adrenaline rush, right? :p

Also, I don't have many details yet, but I am supposed to participate in a fashion show in March. Hopefully I won't be sewing the night before that event, hahahah.

Well, back to the machine! Just wanted to check in and let you know I am still working.....

Hi there!! I am so super busy right now but I know I need to pop in and say "Hello"!!!

Once I have another lull, I can post more things on my website, but I kind of wish I had someone else to do that for me.

I just finished this - it's an Elvira Christmas costume. In the photo, I hadn't quite finished the belt yet, but you get the general idea.

Just made these wings. They will go on a sweatshirt/jacket. I'm almost done!

Made this Klingon Spine Armor for my brother a while back, and now have a photo of him wearing it. Sorry if I have posted it before, I can't remember...

I have three custom cosplay orders coming up soon and the start of making a bunch of TOS Klingon vests, which I hope to have a picture of soon.

Yep, am recovering from turkey day and extended relative visits! Today is the first relative-free day I have had, and am busy catching up on things. I finally got a photo from a client wearing the Klingon spine armor, so I can post it on my website. Plus, I have had inquiries about TOS Klingon Armor, and will post more about that, soon. I made a few fascinators, and managed to list a few yesterday. I have some big projects in the works, but I can always make time for customs.

Ok, so I wanted to show you some of the things I've been working on, as well as the centerpieces I made...

To start, here is a hat I made as an example for my friends to use to make hats at my party. It's a little fascinator:

Some people made hats based on this design or on some of the table centerpieces I had scattered around our craft area, as well as books, to provide inspiration.

I am working on these hats right now to sell, and they are in various states of completion:

Whew! That was fun, but I'm really glad that project is over...

Well, well, well. I know what you are thinking! Where the hell did she go? She puts up this new website, blabs on about Halloween, and then...crickets.

I have to tell you that I have been cheating on clothing with table centerpieces. I am in charge of decorations for my sons' school silent auction fundraiser and have been making hat themed table decorations. There are only fifteen, but each one had to be different and eye-catching. I heard rumors that they may get auctioned off. I hope so, I never want to see them, and their glitter-bearing brims again. Sorta. So I will be getting back to work on stocking my website. I figure I will finish doing that by 2026, unless the world ends in 2012.

I finally finished the last centerpiece today, and will try to take nice photos of them on the tables, before they get trashed. Ok, I can't lie, I am pretty proud of them.

But let's move on, shall we?

I started researching a dress for a customer, which involves watching a certain segment of a movie over and over, to see the dress from every angle. Then I sketch, make fabric and time estimates and am now waiting for the next step. Will put the sketches up as soon as I know if this moves forward!

I still have a pile of things and sketches of outfits to get to...soon. Usually, I wll start on them, and then get a request for a custom item. So whenever I want to do custom work, I just start on the pile. ;)

Halloween Pt. 2

I meant to have more things sewn, but I've had a slew of last minute costume requests! I usually have a lot of last minute requests, and they are fun. However, the Sucker Punch costumes I've been working on have to be put to the side. Oh well. I'll finish them eventually. ;)

How To Save on YOUR Halloween Costume!

So, besides the other costumes I'm working on, I'm still slowly finishing up the male/female joker costumes for a local couple. I've been working on it in pieces in-between other costumes. I wanted to show you what I did this week!

The guy wanted some purple striped pants like the Heath Ledger Joker character. Those pants are very hard to find, and if you do find them, they are expensive. Finding the exact material to make them myself, don't even ask. So, I advised them to go to the thrift store and find a few things I could dye. I've already dyed a trench coat purple. I decorated a black corset (I added a heart, spade, etc.) they found and used part of a nylon nightie they also purchased to make a skirt.

They also found a pair of gray pinstripe pants. The pants are 80% polyester, so I knew RIT wasn't going to work. I used iDye for Polyester in purple to get the right color. The pants aren't ironed yet, but you can see the dramatic difference:

It looks like nothing is happening, but it is! I've had some more local requests, and also made some baby blankets in my spare (hahaha) time. I have things planned to list on my website! Also, every other week something weird has happened to our house, so that's been a distraction. Like, we have bears in our area, and last week one ran in front of my car.

More Halloween and Leeloo Bandages!

Yay! I figured out how to make the Leeloo Bandages available on my site! I also included a downloadable PDF file with measurement information and a chart. Once I finish another Klingon Spine Armor (more details on that later), I will post that, too.

I know this is taking a long time, but I have to code everything myself and continue to run Indiscretion. But I am making progress. :D

Hi there! I am sewing....somewhere here in the background! With Halloween and many other cons coming up, I'm busy with customs, but I did not forget about my website. I keep redesigning the selling area because I want it to be easy to use. In the meantime, I found a cool way for me to answer questions! Through Google Voice, you can text me and ask a question. Network charges for your phone plan may apply (like if you don't have unlimited messaging, etc...) and will only work for the US and Canada. So give it a try if you feel like it!

505 312 4DIY (4349) I will try and answer as soon as I can, except when sleeping. :P We are on Mountain time here in New Mexico, and although I do stay up late and get up early, if you text at 4am, you won't be getting a quick answer anytime soon. :D

Hey, Your Website Looks Different!

Yes, yes, it does. I've been working on it for weeks. It still isn't completely done, but I wanted to put up what I have so far! Most of the links should be ok. One of many pet peeves I have is that the menu on my blog doesn't quite line up with the rest of the site, but I'm working on it. Also, I found a text router thing so people can text me without giving out my number. Not sure how this will work, but if it doesn't, I can always delete it. :D

If you happen to look and see something amiss, let me know! There is lots of content that needs to be added, and that will happen, I promise.

Etsy and KISSmetrics - What Do We Do Now????

Many sellers and buyers are upset. I've been looking in the forums and basically from what I can discern, Etsy issued a statement saying they did not know what happened, and they removed Kissmetrics from the site. However, people are finding the rogue cookie on their computers. And it affects ANYONE who used/uses Etsy. The more the news gets out, I am sure those of us who sell on Etsy will see less traffic.

I'm no computer expert, but I'm just as paranoid as the next internet user. I thought I would pass on some suggestions for people to use on their computers if they want to try to remove the cookie. Apparently if you have an iPad, you are probably safe because it does not use Flash (thanks, Steve Jobs!).

EDIT: I went to the KISSmetrics site on my iPad and it told me it was installed in my browser. YAY.

The top four recommended in the forums (some work with Firefox - it is thought Firefox helps block the LSOs, etags in particular, but I don't know the whole story, but I use it anyway):

Adrianne Curry and her Aeon Flux Costume

Hi there!

In the midst of working on my revamp of my website, http://www.indiscretion.us, I suddenly got a flood of questions from friends concerning Adrianne Curry's Aeon Flux costume worn at the San Diego Comic Con.

No, I didn't make that version of the costume for her. I made a version for her created from wet look spandex. The one she wore to the con was made from latex. Probably to most people who are not very familiar with the difference between wet look spandex and latex will mistake the costumes.

This is the latex costume worn at the San Diego Comic Con (and she did have knee pads and a holster and knife holder, I believe, but they broke (not made by me) and she tweeted about it):

[She may have worn gloves I made for her out of wet look spandex - I can't tell for sure from the pics, but they are less shiny and smoother than the latex.]

This costume is the one I made for her, but is being mistakenly labelled as the back of the latex costume:

The mix-up is understandable due to the fact that they are similar in design. She did wear one of the Leeloo costumes I made (top and pants, the suspenders were made by someone else), and her friend Honor wore the Leeloo bandage costume I made for Adrianne.

I wasn't going to post anything, but I see now that some online articles are mistakenly referring to the back of my costume as the one worn at the San Diego Comic con, and I wanted to clear things up.

I can't decide...

Maybe you can help me? I've been playing with logo ideas and I am making myself crazy, literally. I've started to talk to Photoshop. So far it hasn't answered back, so I think I'm o.k.

I wanted to play off the name of my business - Indiscretion, but also associate it with sewing.

First I started with this:

My friend Sheika looked it over for me and suggested alone, the spool doesn't look like a spool, but with the full name, it looks like a spool of thread.

I used Impact for the font, but it looked too fat. Also, I asked a few friends and my husband, and they thought Sew Wicked would relate better.

So I did this, one with all Arial letters, one with Arial, but I used a different font for the "spool" to make it look more like a real one. Which do you like better?

Poppy Field Bead Company

My friend Julia recently took over the Poppy Field Bead Co. in Albuquerque, on 4401 A Cutler Ave, NE . I went over there the other day to take in the dazzling array of beads in billions of colors! And, she still doesn't have all the beads out on the floor, can you believe that? Anyway, I picked up a number of tubes of seed beads, crystal beads and a cool book on...beading. She will have classes and other wonderful fun activities at the store. Just be prepared to walk out of the store with a purchase because the beads are hard to resist...

My Experience with Orglamix

Let me preface this entry by saying that I am giving my personal experience here and am in no way trying to defame anyone's livelihood. I have been asked by a few people to share my experience with Orglamix and will attempt to do so here, giving you the facts as best as I can. I have been hesitant to do so because I don't want to be personally attacked for sharing my experiences with you and the whole situation with Orglamix made me feel very uncomfortable. People do make mistakes, and running a small business is not easy and I do understand that...as well as the fact that customers are the most important part of a business. I love selling as well as buying DiY and continue to support those whom I admire and trust.

Orglamix was recommended to me by several people. So...

I purchased six items on Nov. 8, 2010 - Aurora Eye Color, Violace Corrector, HD Microfinish Powder, Magnetism Primer, Self-Adjusting Mineral Foundation and Rosy Future Blush.

By Nov. 18th, I realized I had not received these items and sent Cheri a message on Etsy. She repied within three hours that she was caught up with orders as of the day before but would check her records the next day.

Nov. 19th: I sent her a message around 6pm to see if she'd found anything out because I hadn't heard from her.

Nov. 20th: I hadn't heard from her and through PayPal found the number for her business and left a message concerning the order in the late morning. When I didn't hear back I filed a claim with both Etsy and PayPal.

Around 7pm that evening I got a message from Cheri on Etsy stating that she'd been ill and that my order had actually been skipped. She offered me a refund or to send the order with a small gift. I decided to have her send me the products.

I was out of town when the package arrived and had closed my PayPal dispute while I was away since the package showed it had arrived and was on hold for me and she'd countered my dispute also stating that the package had been sent.

When I opened the package, I had five pots. Four were the items I ordered, and an extra shadow I did not order (the gift, I assume). The Violace corrector and the Aurora shadow were missing. I sent her a message on Etsy to let her know these items were missing and asked her if she could send them out.

While waiting to hear back, I decided to look at the products. When I opened the primer, I found this:

There appeared to be bits of lint throughout the product as well as a blob of black stuff embedded in it. After seeing that, I sent another message on Etsy with a picture of the product to Cheri that after receiving the tainted primer, I wanted to return everything to her.

She apologized for the tainted product and sent me her policies on returns, which recommends sending things back by FedEx, UPS or insured Parcel Post. Also, returns are processed within 30 days of receipt.

I opted to send everything back by Priority with Delivery Confirmation and shipped out everything the next day, as I did not want to spend more money than I had to on returning the items. After about a week I checked the tracking and it had arrived within four days of me sending it but I hadn't heard from Cheri. I was concerned that she would forget about my package as she'd forgotten to send it to me in the first place, and then forgot to send me two of the things I ordered. Also, since I knew that people were having trouble getting refunds with GlitterSniffer after the 45 days via PayPal, I was concerned about this with Orglamix, as now it was December 10th (33 days after purchase), and the package showed that it arrived on December 6th. I sent her a message on Etsy to ask her about the refund.

Dec. 11th: I also followed up with a phone message the next afternoon when I didn't hear back, asking her about the refund and asking if she could call me to explain how things were going to be handled.

She sent me a message on Etsy on December 11th at 1:07pm reiterating her 30 day refund policy. However, when I checked my Etsy messages a little later, I received a message from Cheri around 3:19pm that she'd gone ahead and issued the refund.

And that is the story. I did not at the time check any of the labels to see if they were doubled, as I didn't know about the relabeling or repackaging. Thank you for reading my experience and please be polite and considerate to all when and if responding. :D

My friend and fellow DiYer recently attended and was a vendor at the California's Kids Faire. She was mislead by the person in charge of getting sellers and I think you should read what she had to say about her experience, so you don't get had, too.

As most of you know, I paid a lot of money to do this "big expo" last weekend. It ended up being a complete waste of time and money. I sold absolutely nothing and gave away MAYBE 50 cards. I was in tears on Sunday and we ended up leaving 2 hours early (along with about 5 other vendors).

I blamed my work and my product. I figured that eventhough people seemed to like my shades, no one wanted to buy them because they're a stupid item. I even lowered my prices significantly on Sunday just to try to make some of the money back that I borrowed to be in this show.

I was promised tons of sales, told past vendors made thousands, I was told that eventhough it was a kids faire, they were really promoting tweens/teens this year, I was told they get 70,000 people over the course of the weekend. I was told there would be other home decor vendors. ALL BULLSH!T. Attendance was crap, there was absolutely NOTHING geared towards tweens/teens. The mix of vendors was ridiculous. They had 3 f*cking instant rice booths for f*ck's sake.

I don't know why I didn't think about it before signing up, but I checked Yelp out this morning and found one review that validated me somewhat - naming specifically the twat who called me in the first place. I also added my own review:

I will also be writing letters to the editors of every newspaper in the Bay Area. I left a message for the douchebag, but my guess is I will never hear from her again. I'm still so beyond pissed right now that I'm making myself sick.

Everyone knows that hip hop, in general is a male dominated sub culture. However, this does not mean that women can not participate in it's many elements. Elements = dj, graff art, beatbox, break dance, mc's, etc.

With that said, Albuquerque and New Mexico in general is indeed home to a ton of underground female hip hop artists. You just wouldn't know about them because there is never any outreach to the female artists by the male hip hop community. Rarely I make an appearence at true hip hip events, most of my performances are done outside of this community due to it's arcaic way of shutting out female hip hop heads. Usually the only time you can see female hip hop acts is if there is a battle of some kind. The battle atmosphere is something that most women shy away from due to it's competive nature. Women should have an alternate route in showing off their skills. Ie. So lo shows, guest appearences during regular hip hop events, not to mention having a hand in the judging process or competing if they would like in the beat battles, dj battles, graff battles, mc battles.

Frankly, I think it's about damn time this all changes. Her hip hop, the show that is going to take place this weekend, is long over due. I had hosted a similar event about a year and a half ago. Let me tell you, the turn out was amazing! So amazing that we had to turn people away at the door because of capacity issues. This is proof that the community wants and loves to see more women engaging in the hip hop community. This show is our answer the community that you are going to start seeing more women at hip hop events doing things they want to do as opposed to doing what they are told. Becoming a colorful and much overdue part of the hip hop tapistry.

This event needs support from all who believe in it's cause. The cause being to inspire more women who want to be involved in hip hop. Having all female acts/artists/hosts; shows not only that we are alive and well, but that we are here as a sisterhood to help and answer any questions any women might have about how to get started in the hip hop community. Hip hop is a global movement, and in most cases embraces the sister hip hop aspect.

It's about time we had the same awareness and openness here in my hometown of Albuquerque.

Please join me in letting other women know they are welcome to be a part of hip hop, that their is a place for them in hip hip other then being a spectator, or half naked back up dancer.
Let's make Her Hip Hop an annual event that will grow to be bigger, better, stronger and more wide spread as the years continue. I'm determined to put little ol' Burque and New Mexico on the map when it comes to dope female hip hop artists.

I look foreward to meeting you, and building with my sisters.

Letter of Complaint sent to DirecTV via PlanetFeedback

I know DirecTV is pretty much a monopoly here in Albuquerque - so I thought I'd post the letter I just sent them - shame on them for being so shoddy:

We ordered service to start at our new home at the end of August 2009, when we moved in. We had specialized tech people come the same day as DirecTV to coordinate installation and set up our home theater/surround sound system.

When the DirecTV representative came, they brought us HR 20s. Our tech people knew right away, as we would have not, that these were older models, and asked for the newer models, HR 23s. The DirecTV tech said they were out of the HR 23s and would call us and let us know when they were in so we could swap them out.

He never called. A few days later, my husband called DirecTV to inquire about the new receivers. He was told someone would call him back. Nobody did.

He made another inquiry with the same results a week later.

Finally, after almost a month of getting shunted over the phone, my husband spoke to a supervisor concerning this issue. She told us there is no difference between the models (which is not true) and you get whatever is on the truck, and the DirecTV shouldn't have told us he could get the other ones.

This made me angry and suspicious. Why shouldn't the tech tell us this? Is DirecTV trying to unload older technology surplus on customers they feel won't know any better? "You get whatever is on the truck" is a very flippant and trite answer. Is DirecTV more like a flea market than a trusted business?

We were also told if we wanted the other receivers, which we should have gotten in the first place, we would have to pay to upgrade. This smells a bit like fraudulent business practice.

If I go to buy a cell phone, pay for the latest equipment, and the person hands me a cup and string and says - sorry, we're out of your model, but use this instead...and never follows up, you'd be annoyed, too.

Here's what I'd like for you to do: I want you to put in a work order to switch out the refurbished HR 20s that we currently have, and give us the HR 23s as we should have had in the beginning. And at your expense.

I have to be honest with you, DirecTV has been gaining a bad reputation here in Albuquerque for their somewhat gorilla-like business style. I was warned before working with your company.

I plan to post this letter in my public blog, and also contact the Better Business Bureau concerning your branch in Albuquerque.

But I think the pictures shown on CNN and on ABC of Michael Jackson's legs and sore are really in bad taste. Going on and on about the sore and speculating that it was from drug use - despite his claims it was from a spider bite (possibly a Brown Recluse - if you search on the internet you'll see some very graphic photos of injuries from this spider bite. The wounds can become necrotic and black like that).

Anyway, the other thing that makes me wonder:

Sellers Assisting Sellers

I've been on Etsy a while now, and I have been on a number of street teams. Currently, I'm most active in: DiyScene, Enchanted Artists and Crafters of New Mexico, and SASsy.

The last one on my list, called Sellers Assisting Sellers - "SASsy" - is a whole list of sellers on Etsy whom you can convo for help/critiques, etc.

Good clean fun. Here's how it goes kids :D

Mini bio:
KleanKitty is an itty bitty company, born in the kitchen of a house in Ontario, Canada.

I have had a passion for creating since I was little and I tried to develop my creativity by taking painting and sculpture classes, and upon graduating high school I attended a private makeup college.
I completed and received a diploma in Beauty Make-up, a certificate in Advanced Airbrush Make-Up, a Certificate in Hairstyling, and a Certificate in Special Effects Make-Up.

It was at school that I realized, that what goes on behind the scenes, the skin below the make-up, is important too. Doing make-up on faces day after day, I saw that the skin care regime is one of the most important things you can do, to both look good, and feel good. You can put make-up on uneven skin, or sensitive skin, but the skin is still going to be bumpy and delicate. and by loading on foundation, concealer or powder, you are just covering it up. You aren't improving it at all.

So I then began creating soaps and bath products at home as gifts for friends and family. I wanted to create products that were handmade, with less preservatives and chemicals, less harsh on the environment, and above all, products that feel good, both the way they effect the skin, and the way they make the wearer feel.

And eventually, KleanKitty just took on a life of it's own!
